Victorian bathroom on Station Road
A cramped bathroom with a leaking shower became a walk-in wet room with tiles that run to the ceiling.

The brief
The owners of this 1890s terrace had lived with a leaking shower for years and a bathroom too small to dry off in. They wanted a walk in shower, more light and a room that is easy to clean.
What we did
The old shower tray had leaked into the joists for years. We stripped the room to brick, replaced two joists, boarded and tanked the walls, then tiled floor to ceiling in handmade white ceramic.
Moving the shower to the window wall gave a level walk in area with a linear drain. We built a recessed niche between the studs for bottles and ran the tiles to the ceiling, so there are no painted walls to blister in the steam.
Our partner plumber moved the waste and fitted a thermostatic shower valve, and the electrics for the towel rail and extractor fan were signed off on day seven.
The result
A new window sill in oak and a heated towel rail finished the room. The owners were back in the bathroom on day nine.
The kitchen ceiling below, stained from years of leaks, was replastered and painted in the same visit.
Months later the grout is still white and the ceiling below has stayed dry.
