Sash window repair on Mill Street
Six original sash windows brought back to smooth, quiet working order instead of being replaced.

Drag the line or use the arrow keys to compare the room before and after.
The brief
The owner had been quoted for six new windows elsewhere and asked us for a second opinion. The frames were sound, but the sashes were painted shut and rattled.
The house sits close to the conservation area in the centre of Marrow Hill, and the owner wanted to keep the street front as it was.
What we did
All six windows were painted shut and rattled in the wind. We freed the sashes, replaced cords and pulleys, fitted draught brush strips and repainted the frames.
Two bottom rails had soft wood. Instead of replacing the sashes, we cut out the rotten sections, spliced in new timber and primed every bare surface before painting.
We worked on two windows at a time and fitted temporary boards overnight, so the house was never open to the weather.
The result
The cost was about a third of replacement, and the street keeps its original windows.
The rooms are noticeably quieter and the windows open with one hand.
Each window now has new cords and brush seals, and the owner has our care sheet for repainting.
