Alcove wardrobes in Ashby Cross
Two fitted wardrobes scribed into uneven stone alcoves, painted to match the bedroom walls.

The brief
A stone cottage bedroom with two deep alcoves either side of the chimney breast and nowhere to hang clothes. The owners wanted storage that looks as if it has always been there.
What we did
The alcoves were 40 mm out of square from top to bottom. We built the carcasses in the workshop and scribed the face frames on site so each wardrobe meets the wall without a gap.
The floor slopes 25 mm towards the window, so the plinths were cut to the floor and the doors set level.
The doors are tulipwood panels with a simple bead, made to suit the cottage rather than a modern flat front. A scribed cornice closes the gap at the ceiling, so the wardrobes reach the full height of the room.
The result
Inside: hanging rails, adjustable shelves and a pull-out shoe drawer. Painted in the same colour as the walls so they read as part of the room.
Each wardrobe has an LED strip that switches on when the doors open.
Two days in the workshop, two days on site. The bedroom was usable every evening.
