The brief
A converted threshing barn with a large open ground floor, underfloor heating and full height glass at one end. The owners wanted wide oak boards that would cope with both the heating and the sun.
The ground floor covers about 70 square metres.
What we did
The barn has underfloor heating and a lot of glass, so we chose an engineered oak rated for heated floors and acclimatised the boards on site for a week before laying.
Before laying, we checked the screed moisture and ran the heating to the manufacturer's schedule. The boards were glued to the screed, which suits a heated floor better than a floating one.
We cut the boards around four original timber posts and finished with a hard-wax oil that the owners can spot-repair themselves.
The skirting was made from offcuts of the same oak, so the edge detail matches the boards.
The result
The floor runs in one direction through the whole room without a single threshold. After a winter of heating the boards are flat and the joints are tight.
We left spare boards and a tin of the same oil in the barn store for future repairs.
