Stone farmhouse and barn conversion in the hills at Kettle End

Barn conversions need joinery that copes with uneven walls and big temperature swings. We use kiln-dried oak and allow for movement in every fitted piece.

Access up some farm tracks is limited in winter, so we book larger projects here between March and October.

Many of the farmhouses are stone with lime mortar and solid floors. We use breathable finishes on the walls and test the slabs before any wooden floor goes down.

Barn conversions often have large open rooms and high ceilings, so we bring scaffold towers and plan the work so each part of the room is finished before the next one starts.

Travel up here takes longer, so we book full days and bring everything on the van to avoid extra trips.

Engineered oak over underfloor heating is common in the conversions, and we have laid it in several barns along the valley.

Small repairs are still possible in winter on days when the tracks are clear.
